Increasingly senior executives are realizing that they need to actively manage their career rather than merely waiting for a recruiter to call them about an opportunity. And, LinkedIn is quickly becoming the online place to project their brand. Each year LinkedIn provides a review of the most common buzz words that executives use to describe themselves and because these are so common, these are the words to avoid in your resume and LinkedIn profile. The three most overused terms in 2014 were “motivated,” “passionate” and “creative.” Also making the top ten list were “track record” and “expert”. 2014 turned out to be similar to 2013 with respect to senior executive turnover. The economy is improving and employment improved in 2014, but the long term unemployed and slow growth in salaries for most workers continue to be problematic. Liberum Research points out in a recent report that executive turnover totals for C-level executives in North America showed declines from 2009 through the second quarter of 2011. Since then, C-level turnover has been increasing, but this has been in “fits and starts” with 2014 C-level turnover being significantly below that seen in 2008. Liberum believes that the trend will remain about the same through 2015.
